What’s new in 5G networks?
Recently, there have been a lot of discussions about 5G. As a real technology giant, what is 5G, what 5G can do, the latest developments in 5G, and the initial experience of 5G. Zhang Daijun said that he joined Samsung six years ago and began to develop and promote 5G millimeters. Wave, the three major technical characteristics of 5G are summarized as “three super”, super high speed, super link and super low latency.
If the bandwidth of the 6GHz band is like Beijing’s Fourth Ring Road, then the millimeter wave band is like a huge resource outside of Beijing’s Sixth Ring Road. At the same time, 5G network hotspot coverage based on large-scale antenna array (MIMO) is relatively high.
In terms of ultra-low latency, an example can be given: when 4g is 0.5m and 5g is 0.05m, the vehicle system distance at a speed of 200km/h can reach 0.05m. In addition, through time slot compression, 5G time slot length becomes 1/8 of 4G, and edge computing under 5G network also helps to reduce time delay.
In terms of ultra-large links, it is estimated that in the 5G era, the number of links per capita can reach 100 links/person, and the required link density is 1 million/km2 based on the population density of 10000/km2. The link density in the 4G era is 100000/km2. In addition, through resource optimization methods and power-saving algorithms, it is also helpful to realize ultra-large-scale links.
Network slicing is another magical feature of 5G networks. The same network can be specially optimized for three different application scenarios, allowing data to be transmitted on different lanes. The realization of this function will specifically involve different processing methods of user data, application and control data of different applications on the edge cloud and the central cloud.
The 5G standardization promoted by the international organization 3GPP is also proceeding smoothly. It is currently in the REL-15 landing stage. At present, commercial 5G networks are all based on this standard, which can realize the application of ultra-high-speed networks. It is expected that the REL16 standard will be finalized early next year, after which the 5G network will realize the evolution of a true super-large link and low latency.
