These two kinds of optical modules have four independent optical signal receiving and transmitting channels, and need to use WDM technology to multiplex and demultiplex the optical signals, so as to realize the transmission of optical signals on long-distance single-mode optical fibers. The transmission distance of 40GBASE-LR4 optical modules can reach 10 km, while the transmission distance of 40GBASE-ER4 optical modules is longer.
